Houston vocabulary, from Texas law to the exam room. Sees no patients.
The word on a search page may be familiar while the words beneath it are not. Peptide therapy, prescription, approval and compounding can appear together. Compounding makes a drug for a person’s particular need, instead of using one supplied ready-made. Read them separately. Ask what each word describes, then ask which product or person the statement refers to.
Use these entries to turn a broad search into a clear discussion. Learning the whole glossary can wait; bring the unclear term to the next talk. Pick the word that is blocking the next question and work outward from there.
A–C
Active ingredient
The working substance within a medicine.
A salt form changes the chemical form of a medicine’s ingredient. For semaglutide, added words such as sodium or acetate identify that change.(a)
A salt form can change the active ingredient: as of September 26, 2026, FDA (the federal Food and Drug Administration) described semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate as different ingredients from the one in approved semaglutide drugs.(a)
That makes the full name useful. Write it down as it appears rather than shortening it to the familiar part. If a name changes between the discussion and the paperwork, ask the prescriber and pharmacist to account for the change. A shared first word is not a full answer.
Clinician
A health professional, such as a doctor or nurse, who considers your health concern and possible care.
In a talk, ask for the person’s full name and professional title. Keep that apart from the name of a website or an office. The person who answers a payment question may be different from the person who weighs a medical question. Direct each question to the person who can answer it.
Texas keeps separate license searches for doctors and physician assistants, nurses, and pharmacies.(b)(c)(d)
P
Peptide
A short amino-acid chain; amino acids are also the pieces used to build proteins.
The term peptide described a substance’s type in the September 26, 2026 record. Its name alone could not establish whether the product was an approved medicine, a legally compounded medicine or an unapproved drug.(e)
So the useful follow-up is a product name. Ask the speaker to name the substance, the form being discussed and the reason for considering it. Keep those answers together. A broad category cannot do the work of a specific explanation, even when the category appears in the name of a service.
Prescription
An order for medicine from an authorized prescriber.
Supplying a drug without the prescription it required was against federal law on September 26, 2026. The law called the drug “misbranded” because it had been supplied without that prescription.(f)
A prescription is a different item from a receipt or an order confirmation. Ask which document names the medicine and which simply records a payment. If the appointment ends with unfamiliar words, ask for a written summary to read later. Keep room in that summary for questions that have not yet been answered.
Turn a search phrase into a question
Which exact medicine name belongs with the plan under discussion?
Who would assess the reason for treatment, and what is their professional title?
Which words describe the medicine, and which describe how the service is paid for?
Can the prescriber say the care plan again in ordinary words, without shortening the names?
